How to make friends in Spanish

Ever wondered how you can make friends in Spanish? What to do and what techniques to use?

Stripey Spanish is here to help! We’re sharing some of our best tips from our Spanish, sangria and speed-friending nights to help you gain some Spanish ‘amigos!’

Find a pub and enjoy a glass of sangria

Find somewhere that yuo are sure to meet Spanish speakers in, either in Spain or LAtin America (!) or at one of the many many amazing cultural and social nights happenig in London town. We’ve found a cosy pub in the heart of Islington for our speed-friending night. Get settled in with a glass of sangria or a mojito.

Get prepared with the ice-breaker questions

Our fteachers talk you through all the Spanish lingo, including key questions, vocabulary and reaction you can use on the night. Here’s a start:

‘¿Cómo te llamas?’ What’s your name?

‘¿En qué trabajas?’ What’s your job?

‘¿De dónde eres?’ Where are you from?

Practise the phrases

We play a game to get you practising recognising what you’ve just learnt in a conversation. We give you about 3 key phrases on a piece of paper and when you hear it, you wave it wildly!

Get speed-friending

Now its time to put all that great vocabulary to the test and actually speak it in a conversation. This part can seem intimidating, but just go for it, strike up a conversation and see what happens. Remember a lot of communication is body language. On our nights you’ll get constant feedback from our teachers to build confidence. By swapping groups regularly you’ll get to practise the phrases several times throughout the evening.

Try group settings

You’ve perfected talking to another person but what happens when you get into groups? It’s slightly more challenging and helps you to learn it in a group setting and socialise with the people you’ve already met.
