Don't be full of it! 7 of the worst excuses to not learn Spanish

March 19, 2017 Carla Jones

Excuses, excuses, excuses…we are all full of them. Today, with access to so many learning tools the opportunity to engage with other languages is greater than ever. We say gone are the excuses to remain monolingual!

I’ve listed the top seven excuses we’ve all made at some point…any sound familiar?

1. I’m too old to learn a language

Rejected: The saying 'the older you are the wiser you become' is definitely applicable when it comes to our language learning skills.

2. I don’t have time

Rejected: It’s s not as time consuming as we think. Only 15-20 minutes of committed language learning everyday will give you great results - you can do it anywhere on the move and in fun ways in your everyday life and even with music.

3. I don’t have the money

Rejected: Taking classes can be useful but with the help of great apps, websites and language learning communities you will be able to develop your skills at your own pace whilst not being completely alone.

4. What if I fail?

Rejected: With the risk of sounding cliché… what’s the worst that can happen? You will only get better if you try (and don't stop trying till you get there).

5. I speak English, I don’t need another language

Rejected: Erm, define “need” - English may dominate but remember learning a different language opens a world of possibilities and truly enriches your life. A new language will stay with you forever!

6. I have a terrible memory

Rejected: it’s about finding the right learning method for you, having fun and about monitoring your learning journey. Adapting the language to your day to day life will help loads.

7. I don’t know how to roll my r’s

Rejected: I know that we love to roll are r’s far too much but I can assure you that practice makes perfect. The more you listen the more familiar it will become and the less daunting it will be.

Feeling less held back? We hope so!
