Key Spanish vocabulary and phrases for watching football during the World Cup 2018
Now that the World Cup has kicked off we thought we’d give you a top-up - here is some key Spanish vocabulary and phrases for watching the football during the World Cup season.
Un partido amistoso - A friendly match
Example:
"La selección nacional inglesa de fútbol quiere disputar un partido amistoso contra España."
(The English national football team is to play a friendly game against Spain).
Regatear - To dribble the ball
Example:
"Marcó tras regatear al portero”
(She scored after dribbling past the goalee)
Defender el campo - To defend the pitch
Example:
“Para defender el campo hay que anticiparse al oponente”
(You have to anticipate your opponent to defend the pitch.)
Robar el balón - To steal the ball
Example:
Son muy buenos cuando tienen la posesión, pero necesitan nuevas tácticas para robar el balón
(They are good when they have possession but they need new tactics to steal the ball).
Ser expulsado - To be sent off
Example:
"Cristian Ansaldi fue expulsado esta mañana en el partido"
(Christain Ansaldi was sent off this morning).
Fuera de juego - Offside
Example:
"La regla del fuera de juego es una de las normas más complicadas de entender de este deporte"
(The offside rule is one of the most complicated principles to understand in this sport")
¡El árbitro está vendido! - The referee has sold out to the other side!
Example:
“Si el árbitro está vendido, entonces tienes que meter más goles”
If the referee has sold out to the other side then you need to score more goals
¡Vaya golazo! - What an incredible goal!
Example:
“El golazo de Nacho que hizo gritar a toda España”
(Nacho's incredible goal made the whole of Spain roar).
